What is Earth Day?

Answer:
Earth Day, April 22, is a day used to bring
attention to the world’s environmental needs.

Earth Day first began in 1970.  Since then, countries all over the world have attempted to use the day to jumpstart various environmental causes.  People voluntarily turn out their lights, recycle more, bike to work, etc.  Although Earth Day is celebrated during the spring equinox in some countries (and the fall for some in the southern hemisphere), most people still consider April 22 the official Earth Day.

If you’re wondering how April 22 was chosen, according to Senator Hayes (the founder), they wanted a date which wouldn’t conflict with religious holidays or school finals.  April was a good month, and they looked toward the end so that the weather might be a little warmer.  At first, there was some flak because April 22 was Lenin’s birthday, but as Hayes pointed out, every day is the celebration of birth of millions of people, some of whom are guaranteed to be notorious.

Next year, Earth Day celebrates its 40th anniversary.  Already, Earth Day Network is planning ways to bring in even more support and global awareness and community for environmental concerns.
