What is Love?

Answer:
Love is a tricky concept and takes on highly different
nuances and meanings across cultures, times and types of relationships.  Many people would agree that love involves some combination of desire, affection, loyalty, attraction and devotion.  But it is difficult to find someone who has a precise (or even concise) definition of the word.

Some talk about love as containing a choice to be associated with and connected to someone, while others would describe love as not being a choice at all but an integral part of one’s existence, like fate.  Some describe love as involving both feeling and action, whereas others would describe it as being either action or feeling.  Some describe love as being realized by inaction, and others by action.  Some also distinguish between loving someone and liking someone.  Finally, love is often used differently when it refers to love between human beings, humans and other beings, and humans and inanimate objects.

Many writers, singers, film artists, etc. over the ages have explored different types of love in different relationships, like parents and children, siblings, a person and his/her significant other, a person and his/her friends/coworkers/countrymen/kinsmen, a person and his/her pet or trusted animal, a person and his/her nation or land, etc.  However, when one hears about a love story, it usually refers to romantic love between two people.
