What is Marriage?

Answer:
In defining marriage, geographical location and cultural
norms must be considered.  However, marriage is generally regarded as a social and often legal contract between two people that recognizes their relationship.  The two people become united in a variety of ways, most notably emotionally and economically.  Though the practice of marriage is varies among different cultures and locations, it is often formalized by a wedding ceremony to mark its beginning.

Although many people see weddings as religious events, recognition of a marriage by one’s government is necessary for marriage laws to impact those that are married.  Civil marriage is a legal construct without regard to the religious affiliation of the individuals involved.

The first recorded laws regarding marriage date back to sixth century Babylon, and it is generally accepted that the practice of marriage pre-dates these laws.  The legal and social requirements of marriage have changed over time and have always varied with location and culture.  Today, marriage in many Western cultures includes the creation of a new household for the newlyweds to share.  However, this is not the case in all cultures, and many couples who do live together are not married.
