What is a horror movie?

Answer:
A horror movie, or horror film, is a
movie that is meant to make viewers react with fear, terror, and horror.  Horror movies often have a supernatural theme, involving monsters, zombies, evil spirits, and the like.  Death is another common theme in horror movies, often with a very large casualty count.  Death is often presented with as much gore as possible, with massive body counts and blood everywhere.

Some of the earliest horror movies were silent films, such as The House of the Devil.  Classic early horror movies include Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.  Following those classics, other types of horror movies came into being, such as Psycho, The Exorcist, and Invasion of the Bodysnatchers.  More modern horror movies included the Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street series.  There are many B-movie horror films as well, which have either largely been forgotten or are watched for humor since they are of such bad quality.
