What is Football?

Answer:
Football is a class of games played between two teams
where a ball (size and shape vary) is kicked and/or carried into a goal on either end of a field. In the US, football (also called American football) uses an oval shaped ball and two teams of 11 players attempt to kick, pass and carry the ball into the end zone at the opposite side of the field.

Outside the US, football generally refers to the game Americans call soccer. In this game a round ball is used and two teams of 11 players can only kick (or knock using head or torso) the ball into the goal or end zone.  Both American football and soccer grew out of early forms of rugby played in the United Kingdom in the mid-1800s.

American football is played by all ages, but the professional league, the National Football League, is the biggest and culminates in the Super Bowl each January. This championship game is the most-watched televised event in the US with more than 100 million viewers in the US and abroad.

For soccer, the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) is the largest governing body and the member nations compete every four years in the World Cup. In 2006, the World Cup was watched by more than 715 million people worldwide.
