What is fashion design?

Fashion design is influenced by social and time differences and started in the 19th century by a man named Charles Frederick Worth. Before Mr. Worth set up shop in Paris, anonymous seamstresses dominated the industry.  Worth's success came from his ability to tell people what to wear, not by letting them tell him what to make, as earlier seamstresses had done.

There are three types of fashion - high-fashion made-to-measure with the garment being custom-made for certain individuals; ready-to-wear, which is a small collection of non-custom garments usually sold during a "fashion week"; and mass-market, which relies on large selections of ready-to-wear clothing with cheap materials and manufacturers often trail big-name fashion designers just to see if those fashions will catch on.
